Westside Gibraltar: A superb place to live in Gibraltar

Westside Gibraltar: Gibraltar is a British territory located in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Situated on a rocky cape in the Mediterranean Sea, this beautiful enclave is famous for its 426-meter-high limestone promontory (The Rock of Gibraltar), its beaches, its cultural mix, and for having the only population of wild monkeys in Europe.

The West Coast has a more urban feel than the East Coast. Westside Gibraltar is where most Gibraltarians live and work and where you will find many of the city’s cultural attractions, shopping areas, and hotels. The main attractions of the city of Gibraltar include the Moorish Castle, Main Street, the Gibraltar Botanical Gardens, the National Museum, the Gibraltar Cable Car, and Marina Bay.

Due to its coastal location, Gibraltar has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, occasionally warm winters. January temperatures usually range between 11 and 17 °C. On the other hand, in summer, temperatures usually range between 20 and 29 °C.

Where to stay in Westside Gibraltar

The west coast is home to the city centre and is where you will find the main museums and cultural attractions, a wide range of restaurants and nightlife, and some of the best hotels in the city.

As its name suggests, Westside Gibraltar is the area to the west of the impressive Rock of Gibraltar.

This elongated urban area, one of the most densely populated territories on the planet, is home to over 90% of the Gibraltarian population.

The West Coast is also the main administrative, commercial, cultural, and entertainment centre of the territory.

Main Street runs through this bustling central district. Gibraltar’s main shopping promenade is lined with stores and flanked by buildings displaying a mixture of different architectural styles.

Some must-see cultural attractions in this area include the Gibraltar National Museum, which offers historical exhibits and artefacts dating back thousands of years, the Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary Crowned, the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the Convent and the King’s Bastion.

If you’re looking for some nature and wildlife, the Gibraltar Botanical Gardens and the Alameda Wildlife Park are located in the Upper Town area, south of the city centre. Nearby, you can also find the Gibraltar Cable Car station, which takes you to the top of the rock and allows you to enjoy breathtaking views of Gibraltar, the Spanish coast, and Africa.

Casemates Square, located at the northern end of Westside Gibraltar, is the main square and meeting place of the city. The Admiral Casino, ferry, and cruise terminal are not far away.

Downtown Gibraltar is small and easy to walk. To get to more rugged or outlying areas, the easiest way to get around Gibraltar is by bus. Gibraltar has five city bus lines covering most of the territory (except for the top of the Rock).

As you would expect from Gibraltar’s main residential, business, and tourist areas, the Westside also hosts the majority of Gibraltar’s accommodations.
