What is technological interior design and how to apply it?

Technological interior design is a growing trend that tries to respond to a need: to find the perfect balance between design and technology in the home.

Home automation tries to make life in the home much easier and more comfortable; however, many times, the devices are not integrated with the decoration and clash with the home. Technological interior design remedies this problem.

What is technological interior design?

Technological interior design is a concept that refers to the fusion of technology and interior design to achieve an integrated whole. Under this idea, it is not necessary to renounce design and aesthetics to enjoy the benefits of new technologies inside the home.

For many years, the belief has been held that technological devices are clumsy and cold. For this reason, many people refused to introduce them into their homes. Or, on the other hand, they incorporated very innovative elements that clashed with the rest of the decoration.

How did this concept come about?

Ten years ago, the specialized studio Espacio Scena created this concept to demonstrate that it is possible to have it all: technology and design. They started in Mallorca and, little by little, they have been spreading.

Pioneers in combining design and technology, Espacio Scena has been able to shape this new concept of interior design and make it grow. Thus, it has become a meeting point between architects, interior designers, and clients to achieve perfect harmony.

How is technological interior design applied in a home?

The work basically is to create technological spaces based on design trends. Technology is something very useful that has changed our lives, but it can also be invasive; on the other hand, classic interior design tends to discard technology because it does not understand it and, as a result, houses are created without all the possible comforts.

In other words, the idea is to introduce gadgets into the home without clashing with the environment and that have a specific use. These can be used to open and close doors or windows, activate loudspeakers throughout the house, control lighting, and so on.

Almost anything is possible, even installing a button on the headboard of the bed to connect the coffee maker so that, as soon as we get up, we have our coffee ready. This is, for example, one of the projects they have worked on at Espacio Scena.

Examples of technological interior design

In addition to the example we have mentioned, lately, there has been a notable increase in requests related to leisure and, in particular, to home theatres.

Different atmospheres have also been created within a home. For example, separating the home with sliding doors that, at the push of a button, open completely to create a huge open-concept loft.

The goal of technology within the home is to make life easier or better for the people who live in it. But it is important that it is integrated with the design and goes unnoticed, to preserve that cosy home feel.

Technological interior design refers to the incorporation of advanced technologies into the design and functionality of interior spaces. It involves integrating various electronic and digital elements to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal, comfort, convenience, and efficiency of a space. Technological interior design often combines traditional design principles with cutting-edge technologies to create innovative and futuristic environments.

Here are a few examples of how technology can be incorporated into interior design:

  1. Smart Home Integration: Technological interior design often involves the integration of smart home systems that allow for the control of various functions within a space, such as lighting, temperature, security, and entertainment systems, through voice commands or smartphone apps.
  2. Automated Systems: Automation plays a significant role in technological interior design. It can include motorized blinds or curtains, smart lighting systems with programmable settings, and automated audio-visual systems that can be controlled remotely.
  3. Interactive Surfaces: Technological interior design can incorporate interactive surfaces, such as touchscreen walls or countertops, which enable users to access information, control devices, or display multimedia content.
  4. Integrated Audio-Visual Systems: Advanced audio-visual systems, including surround sound systems, integrated speakers, and hidden screens, can be seamlessly integrated into the design to provide an immersive entertainment experience.
  5. Energy Management: Energy-efficient technologies, such as smart thermostats, occupancy sensors, and lighting control systems, can be incorporated to optimize energy usage and reduce environmental impact.
  6. Virtual and Augmented Reality: Virtual and augmented reality technologies can be utilized in interior design to create immersive visualizations of the space, allowing clients to experience and explore the design before implementation.
  7. Customization and Personalization: Technological interior design can enable personalized experiences through the use of user-specific settings and preferences. For example, adjustable lighting and temperature settings can be programmed to individual preferences.

The aim of technological interior design is to create spaces that not only look aesthetically pleasing but also enhance functionality, comfort, and overall experience through the integration of advanced technologies.
