Gibraltar is a meeting point between two continents – Africa and Europe – and between two seas – the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean – but it is also home to more than 30,000 inhabitants who speak a unique dialect, the only monkeys in the wild in Europe, one of the most peculiar airports in the world and above all it is a meeting place of cultures.
The Pillars of Hercules, according to Greek mythology, marked the boundary of the known world. This expression was used by ancient navigators to refer to the two mountains flanking the Strait of Gibraltar.
According to legend, the same demigod would have placed a pillar on each side of the 15-kilometer-wide channel that separates Europe from Africa.
The Rock of Gibraltar is one of them. The other is on the mountain on the other side of the strait. Mons Abila, which the Romans called it. The Arabs call it Jebel Musa
Beyond Gibraltar, to the east, the Mediterranean becomes the Atlantic Ocean. And for the ancient navigators, this was the point beyond which it was not advisable to enter: the “non-plus ultra”, in Latin, or “no further”.
