Living in Gibraltar Old Town – C21 Gibraltar Properties

Living in Gibraltar Old Town. 200 million years ago, a Jurassic limestone promontory was created, formed by the shells of tiny sea creatures that were compacted layer upon layer on the seabed in the south of what we now call the Iberian Peninsula.150 million years later, the movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates raised these layers of rock to form a colossal column, being moulded by the sea and the climate, to form the iconic shape we all recognize today.

This is the Isthmus and the rock of Calpe, better known as Gibraltar.

A mystery not yet clearly solved by geologists is the fact that the limestone peak that was formed at the top of the rock after the collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, is upside down; I explain: the stones of the top are a few million years older than the base of the mountain.

Architecture in Gibraltar Old Town

Many of the buildings found in Gibraltar Old Town are unique in that they reflect the diversity of nationalities that make up Gibraltar. These include, among others, Georgian wood windows, Genoese style shutters, Portuguese style tile facades, Regency style wrought iron balconies, Andalusian style ceramic tiles and interior courtyards, Victorian ogee cornices, and heavy British military-inspired carved keystones, arched stone portals, and other stonework.

During the Great Siege, which lasted four years, the city suffered widespread destruction. As a result, civilians resorted to rebuilding in the earlier Moorish style, using the old foundations as a guide, resulting in the existing narrow streets, arches, mazes of stairways, and alleys, as can be seen in the upper part of the city. The garrison was able to undertake a larger reconstruction project and produced the bastions, gates, defences, and ramparts (many of which still exist today).

Overall, living in Gibraltar Old Town provides a captivating blend of history, culture, convenience, and community, making it an attractive choice for those seeking a distinctive and vibrant living experience.
